From Alison in Lesvos

Thanks to technology, we can work on hillgirlz from just about part of the world. With the cooperation of others in San Francisco, we have been able to bring you hillgirlz from 15 countries in the past 5 years. Keeping up to date with technology has allowed us to set up office for periods of time with views such as that of the comings and goings on both the elegant Grand Canal in Venice and the bustling Chao Praya River in Bangkok, bundled up in Namche Bazaar overlooked by Mount Everest and between forays into the food markets of Paris.
Right now I am in the village of Skala Eressos on Lesvos where I work with a view of the Aegean Sea, just eighty steps away.
Skala Eressos is a small village supported by agriculture, fishing and tourism. Right now hundreds of international lesbians are here along with Greek families and other visitors. About sixty women live here year round and others come during the summer months to open their businesses along the seafront. Sappho was born here and so it really is a mecca for lesbians who come from all over the world.
Julie Skoler of Blue Shutter Photography is here shooting photos of some of the hundreds of women here as well as the wonderful Greek people and the landscape and architecture. In just a few weeks, Ondine Kilker from The Scene will be here to shoot a video of the upcoming Women’s Festival and you’ll be able to see both photos and the video on Hillgirlz.
The world has been made smaller with the help of technology and our aim is to capture and share some of our experiences with words, photographs and moving images; particularly of Lesvos, which is a place of beauty and interest as well a place of meeting of worldwide women.

Beli's FLOWER FOKES

Last September I began an odyssey that would end in the most surprising and rewarding manner. I took Madeleine Lim’s QWOCMAP class for beginners. On the first day of class, I pitched my idea to make a film so outrageous that either it would be fantastic, or the biggest bust Mad’s program would ever turn out. Since then, my journey has been nothing short of amazing. From the precise formula handed me, to the phenomenal stress of producing an animated film with zero experience or skills at animation or filmmaking, the film is now complete, has been entered into several major film festivals, and accepted or is in consideration by each one so far. This has validated my creativity, inspired and bolstered me to continue in this hectic medium of filmmaking.

FLOWER FOKES will premiere at the Austin Women’s Film, Music & Literary Festival on the 29th of this month and I never thought I would be so excited to go to Texas!

Frameline has said yes – twofold, as the film has been accepted to show at framelin31 in June of this year, and it will be showcased in an ‘Outstanding First Time Filmmaker’ category.

My journey continues to dazzle and surprise me and recently, I landed a position as prop master for a short film of which the director grabbed me afterward to thank me for making the onscreen visuals ‘pop’ with my placement of the things I had acquired. Yesterday, I got a call from a friend in LA, asking me to apply for a position – doing sound for film. She knew the soundtrack for my own film had died SEVEN times, but I persevered and made a kick ass soundtrack. She also congratulated me on Frameline’s acceptance and reminded me of the hefty competition I had to get into that festival, but trust me, that was never lost on me. Much to my surprise and delight, ever since I posted the trailer and information online I have been approached, invited, and asked to show the film in other venues. Please check out the links for more information about the film, watch the trailer and be sure to check out the gallery to see the actors who helped bring the film to Life. It is a fun little piece that was only made and meant to make you smile. I am also working on having a screening in Oakland this May and I will post on this site when and where. Please feel free to drop me a note and I will surely answer.

Be Well Friends,

Beli Out.

The passing of our dear friend Heather MacAllister, at age 38 from ovarian cancer, gives new meaning to the word aging. In some ways, it is a miracle any of us have made it this far.

The baby boomers were the first generation to grow up after "the bomb", and we all knew that the world could end at any second. Not that I really believed it would, but somehow knowing that it could prevented me from starting things that took more than 25 seconds to finish. Hence, for that reason, among others, I finished college when I was 40. Why go to college when the world was going to end?

Yet, here were are. Several of my close friends turned 60 last year, and there is a whole group of us 1953-ers in my circle. Since I was born on January 1, 1954, I throw my lot in with them.

I never thought I would stop wanting to go out to events that start at 9 PM. At parties, we now sit around and talk about menopause. We joke about "how did this happen", while appreciating the wisdom we have hard-earned. My line on turning fifty is, "All those things that used to bother you? You can't remember what they are."

About a year ago, in the middle of Heather's battle with cancer, we were all talking about knee replacement surgery. I turned to Heather and said, "That's what happens when you get old." Her response was, "I'll take it." But it was not to be.

Heather was a brilliant choreographer, fabulous dancer, and one of the biggest personalities I've ever had the pleasure to meet. She gave us so much. She will be sorely missed and vividly remembered.
http://http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/02/26/BAG0UOB2PL1.DTL&hw=heather+MacAllister&sn=001&sc=1000
